The Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation (NLOCF) is a 501-(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in January of 2004 by Lori Livingston who lost her mother, Norma Livingston, to ovarian cancer. The mission of the NLOCF is to raise funds for ovarian cancer research, to increase awareness about the risks, symptoms and treatments of this disease and provide assistance to those undergoing treatment.
Norma was a healthy, active 65-year-old woman who was rarely sick and very proactive about her health. She went to her internist complaining of weight gain, abdominal discomfort, and a chronic cough. When the diagnosis was finally made, Norma had stage 4 ovarian cancer. She endured nine hours of surgery, countless rounds of chemotherapy and experimental drugs, and thirteen months later she passed away.
Norma’s story is like so many, diagnosed too late with the chances of survival slim. Lori decided to make a difference in the fight against ovarian cancer and hence the foundation was started to prevent others from losing their loved ones from this deadly disease, and to provide support to those battling the disease.
Through the sale of the statewide Driving out Ovarian Cancer car tag, NLOCF has raised over $1.5 million dollars to fund local research through the Division of Gynecology Oncology at UAB. Through individual donors, special events and foundation support, additional funding has been raised to directly support ovarian cancer patients and increase awareness about the warning signs of the disease.
In 2019, under the guidance and direction of our partners at UAB, NLOCF implemented Just a Need program to provide direct support services to ovarian cancer patients, survivors and caregivers through medical assistance, financial assistance, and emotional support.
